How this touch screen test works

Place one or more fingers on the test area. Each touch shows as a marker with its own ID, so you can see how many fingers the screen tracks at once. The page records the simultaneous touch count and the maximum reached during the session. It also shows the pointer type (touch, pen or mouse) and, if your device reports them, the pressure and contact radius of each touch.

For dead zones, open the fullscreen grid paint mode and drag your finger across the whole screen. Every cell you touch gets colored. Cells that stay blank are places where the screen does not respond. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or recorded.

How to read the results

  • Touch count. Most modern phones and tablets handle 5 to 10 simultaneous touches. If a fifth finger does not register, that is normal for some devices, but a lower count than the specification can point to a fault.
  • Touch IDs. Each finger keeps its ID while it stays on the glass. If an ID jumps or a touch disappears while you hold still, the screen is losing the contact.
  • Dead zones. Uncolored areas in grid mode mean the digitizer is not responding there. Look for patterns: a whole edge, a vertical strip or a patch under a crack.
  • Ghost touches. Points that appear without you touching the screen, or lines that follow your finger, suggest electrical noise or a failing digitizer.
  • Pressure and radius. Many devices report fixed values or none at all. This is normal, because only some screens measure pressure.
  • Pointer type. Touch should show as touch. A stylus should show as pen.

Touch screen not working? Try these fixes

  1. Clean and dry the screen. Wipe off dirt and fingerprints with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Water droplets and wet fingers cause erratic touches.
  2. Remove the screen protector or case. A thick, bubbly or cracked protector blocks the signal at the edges. Test without it.
  3. Check glove mode. Some phones have a glove or high sensitivity setting that can cause ghost touches or missing touches. Turn it off or on to compare.
  4. Unplug the charger. A cheap or faulty charger can inject noise, causing ghost touches. Test again on battery or with an original charger.
  5. Restart and update. A restart fixes many temporary touch freezes. Install pending system updates too.
  6. Calibrate. On Windows 11, search for Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input in the Start menu. Android does not offer a standard calibration, but safe mode can show whether an app is the cause. On iPhone and iPad, a restart is the main fix.
  7. Disable and re-enable the driver. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, right-click HID-compliant touch screen and choose Disable device, then enable it again.

If dead zones stay in the same place, spread or flicker after a drop, or the screen reacts without touch, the digitizer or its cable is probably failing and needs a repair.

Why test your touch screen

A grid test gives hard evidence before you submit a repair claim, return a device or buy a used one. It also tells you whether a problem is hardware or just a dirty screen or a bad protector.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find dead spots on my touch screen?

Use the fullscreen grid paint mode and drag a finger over the whole screen. Any cell that stays uncolored is a dead zone.

How many touches should my screen support?

Most phones and tablets support 5 to 10 simultaneous touches. The test shows the maximum your device reports.

Why does my screen touch by itself?

Ghost touches are often caused by a dirty or wet screen, a poor charger or a damaged digitizer. Try cleaning the screen and using a different charger.

Can a screen protector cause touch problems?

Yes. Thick, cracked or badly fitted protectors can reduce sensitivity, especially near the edges. Remove it and test again.

Why is pressure not shown?

Many touch screens do not measure pressure and report a fixed value or none. This is normal and not a fault.

Does this work with a stylus?

Yes, the pointer type shows pen when a stylus is used. For pressure and tilt details, use the pen pressure test.

Why can't I swipe from the edge of the screen?

Edge swipes are usually reserved by the operating system for gestures such as going back or opening the app switcher. A case or screen protector that covers the edges can also block touches there.

Why does my phone register ghost touches while charging?

A poor or non-original charger can add electrical noise that the touch controller reads as touches. Try the original charger and cable, and test again with the phone unplugged to see whether the problem stops.
